The Hunger Day collection went well despite the stormy weather
Occasional rains and strong gusts of wind posed a significant challenge for the Hunger Day collection from September 26-28, 2024. Fortunately, the weather does not affect the willingness to help, and for example, many schoolchildren and students got to try collecting.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in Hunger Day!
This time, the national collection target for Hunger Day is one million euros. It seems, however, that we might not quite reach it, if the result estimate for the collection, about 700,000 euros, holds until the districts’ final reports. Part of the reason for the low result estimate is the capricious weather during the collection days, which kept donors off the streets.
According to information received by the district, the collection went mostly very well, even breaking collector records and trying out new collection locations.
- An absolutely fantastic group collecting, and especially the small collectors were warmly received. Our responsible volunteers were also actively present this year, rejoiced Juuso Kiiskinen, collection leader of the Kallio-Käpylä department.
- This year we got a much better result than last year. The schools were more active and the schoolchildren collected at the local S-market, which was new, said Päivi Maunula, collection leader of the Hyvinkää department.
It was heartening to see the community spirit from local businesses, allowing collectors to come indoors during the worst weather, even on short notice.

The main picture on the page shows the collection team of the rescue dog group from the Helsingfors Svenska department with five teams. Team leader Anna-Mari Matikainen said that the group has participated in at least ten Hunger Days. The photographer enjoyed watching how the dogs delighted passersby and allowed everyone who wanted to pet and hug them.
