The Helsinki and Uusimaa district of the Finnish Red Cross has chosen Daniela Owusu as the recipient of the 2025 Pioneer Against Prejudice award. This recognition is given annually during Week Against Racism to an individual, group, or community that has promoted equality, diversity, and social inclusion in Finnish society. This year, Week Against Racism is observed from March 17-23.

Daniela Owusu has served as a role model for other young people and has impressed with her courage. Owusu, from Kirkkonummi, broke the glass ceiling by being the first brown Lucia in Finland. The hate speech and racist comments that followed her selection showed how deep-seated prejudices still are in our society, but at the same time, they sparked a broad public discussion about the importance of opposing racism and promoting equality. The controversy once again highlighted racism in Finland, but Owusu sees something positive in the situation. A huge number of people showed their support for Lucia and strongly expressed their opposition to racism.

Daniela has spoken openly about her experiences on social media and in various interviews. She has reminded us how important it is for every child to see themselves in different roles and to dare to dream. After being elected in the Finnish Lucia vote, she hoped to inspire especially children and young people by showing that anyone can be Lucia.

Daniela received the certificate of the Pioneer Against Prejudice and flowers at the HUP office on March 20, 2025.

This year, the theme of Week Against Racism, coordinated by the Red Cross, is particularly the responsibility of adults to address the racism faced by children and young people. It is the duty of all adults to act against racism and to build a safer environment for children and young people, where everyone has the opportunity to realize themselves without fear of discrimination.
