In April, new members will once again be elected to the district board. Candidates must be announced by January 31. The election committee requests departments to nominate candidates for district trust positions.

At the district’s annual meeting on April 26, 2025, the district chairperson, vice-chairperson, and five members of the district board will be up for election. Additionally, two auditors and two deputy auditors will be elected at the annual meeting. The term of office for the board members elected at the annual meeting will last until the end of the 2027 annual meeting.

Candidates for district trust positions can be nominated by departments and individual members.

The district board needs experts with different backgrounds and expertise

The election committee hopes for a large number of candidates from different parts of the district area. In addition to familiar and experienced board members, the election committee recommends seeking new candidates and diverse expertise both from within the departments and from outside the actively involved group. The election committee also hopes for candidates from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

The election committee considers it important that candidates have local knowledge of their own department’s situation and activities and that they are ready to share their expertise in the board’s work. As a board member, you will get to know other departments, areas, and the district, and bring your own experience to the board’s activities.

Knowledge of authorities close to the Red Cross (such as rescue services, social and health services, immigration issues, education) is beneficial for candidates. Through their profession, work, or hobby, a candidate may have useful expertise in areas such as digital communication and marketing, financial management, or law.

Candidate selection criteria

The tasks of the district board are defined in the Red Cross rules.

According to sections 18 and 19 of the decree on the Finnish Red Cross (No. 827/2017), when nominating candidates for trust positions, candidates must be required to:

  • Commit to the fundamental principles of the Red Cross
  • Have a desire to promote the purpose of the Red Cross

In addition, the composition of the bodies must take into account as accurately as possible:

  • Regional and linguistic representation
  • Representation of different genders and age groups

Only individual members of the organization can be elected to the organization’s trust positions.

When making the candidate list, the election committee takes into account various perspectives important to the organization (such as the candidate’s experience and knowledge of Red Cross activities, various stakeholders, expertise), which departments are expected to highlight when making proposals.

Proposals by January 31, 2025

The election committee hopes that departments will share information about the candidate nomination both with their own members and on their social media channels, so that the information reaches as many people interested in board work as possible. It is worth discussing candidates in departments and joint meetings of departments and ensuring that each area has candidates for the district board.

The election committee requests departments to make their proposals and fill out the candidate form available online by January 31, 2025.

The proposal must also include the proposing department and the contact information of the department chairperson or other responsible person, as well as the candidate’s consent to publish the candidacy on the website and social media channels.

Candidate presentations

The election committee will organize an open election discussion for departments to get to know the candidates. The election discussion will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, starting at 6 PM.

Candidates will be provided with detailed preparation instructions before the event, which is intended to be relaxed and conversational in nature.

Departments will receive the election committee’s proposal for the trust positions and auditors to be elected at the 2025 annual meeting as an attachment to the annual meeting invitation.
