Join us in supporting migrants at the Metsälä detention centre!

Migration is a global phenomenon, to which many states respond with a variety of restrictive policies and measures. These measures can lead to the detention of migrants. Although administrative detention is not intended to be punitive, losing one’s liberty and facing uncertainty and isolation can have a serious impact on individuals’ wellbeing. As individuals are not allowed to leave the detention facility, and contact with family and social networks is often limited, breaking this isolation becomes essential.

The Finnish Red Cross works to support people in this vulnerable situation inside the detention facility in Metsälä, Helsinki. A crucial form of support is provided through the Detention Centre Visits (DCV), organised by Töölö branch volunteers every Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00. During these visits, volunteers offer conversations, psychosocial support, and small but meaningful moments of normality through games. Even brief interactions can help individuals cope with the uncertainty of their situation.

New volunteers wanted!

We are now looking for new volunteers who want to contribute to this meaningful activity. If you are interested in a long-term volunteer position and have experience in offering social or emotional support, we encourage you to apply.

Please sign up here and include a short introduction - your background, experience, and motivation. Selected applicants will be invited for a brief interview with Finnish Red Cross staff.

Become part of a team offering presence, warmth, and humanity where it is needed most! Your time can help break someone’s isolation and make a real difference.
