Operational preparedness in Helsinki and Uusimaa district
Preparedness is strengthened through planning and training
Both volunteers and district employees participate annually in preparedness exercises. By training together with our stakeholders, we strengthen our ability to act in preparedness situations and maintain a comprehensive network of assistance.
Summary of the Chain of Help 2025 exercise and thanks to volunteers
The joint preparedness exercise of 2025 is successfully behind us, and I want to thank everyone who participated in various ways for your contribution. Each of you brought expertise, commitment, flexibility, and above all, the willingness to help. The exercise showed that we at the Red Cross are on the right path in developing preparedness. It also demonstrated how effective our volunteer network is when we face a common challenge.
Your contribution was visible in planning, practical actions, and constructive cooperation. During the exercise, we tested operating models, clarified the shared situational picture, and learned from each other how to support those in need during disruptions. At the same time, we showed that the strength of the Red Cross comes from people — from you, who are ready to step forward when help is needed.
In Uusimaa, about 250 volunteers participated in the exercises. The assistance situations focused on distributing humanitarian aid, evacuation, and catering. Alongside these, we tested the major incident management model developed in HUP, cooperation with Kontti, and a new registration system promoted by our volunteers. Nationally, new elements included electronic situation reporting and a protection model. All of these provided valuable knowledge and skills for the district and volunteers.
Each exercise makes us more prepared for real situations, and we will carry these lessons into future exercises and tasks. Your commitment ensures that together we can provide support and safety when it is most needed.
Thank you once again for your participation, your time, and your heart.
You help make everyday life safer — and our communities stronger.
