International Humanitarian Law
The rules of war, that is the treaties of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), aim to alleviate human suffering during armed conflicts. These treaties protect those who are not taking part in hostilities, including civilians, humanitarian aid workers, and wounded or surrendered soldiers. They also restrict the methods of warfare and the use of weapons.
The treaties of IHL define the role of the Red Cross in peacetime, too, and the Red Cross has a special mandate to promote awareness and understanding of these rules.
The foundation of International Humanitarian Law consists of the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their three Additional Protocols adopted in 1977 and 2005. Nearly all states in the world have committed themselves to respecting the protection provided by the Geneva Conventions.

Activities in the Savo-Karelia District
The district office organizes open training sessions, trains volunteers, maintains a network of volunteers interested in the International Humanitarian Law, and supports local activity groups. Activity groups may, for example, pursue further training together, share knowledge with other activity groups within the local branch, and organize events and awareness campaigns.
Training sessions and events are published on the Red Cross volunteer portal Oma Punainen Risti and in the events calendar of the district.
Taking part in the volunteer activities does not require prior expertise. Anyone, regardless of their background, can also become a volunteer trainer in International Humanitarian Law. Volunteer IHL trainers play a key role in raising awareness and disseminating knowledge about the rules of war.
